Digging into Some Gambling Myths
Gambling is considered by many as a game of chance and luck. As such, the outcome of any game is unpredictable and from this myths are born. Some myths are based on true accounts but have been distorted and blown out of proportion over time. These beliefs have been passed around from one person to another. These myths are superstitions that can be refuted by scientific evidence.
The assumption that gambling involves luck is not valid. Various mathematical calculations are simply tools that can be used to determine one's odds but not how to beat them.
Casinos are well aware of this fact and reply on them to stay in business. Casinos know that a jackpot may happen eventually but not often. The management behind the casino realizes this and use it to their advantage to draw people in to play. If the players had an advantage, the casino would suffer huge losses.
Every casino has an established numerical percentage which determines how much advantage it has over a player. These numerical values are kept to low, yet the casino operators earn large profits from to the number of losses and the sheer number of players.
Every casino game is mired in myths. Blackjack, poker and slots are no exception. Many players boast that their betting systems are solid enough to withstand scrutiny and ensure constant winnings.
This is all false. When one studies the mathematics of how a casino operates and with the concept of the home advantage, one would realize that the betting systems hawked by many players have no solid foundation.
Mathematics has proven that any betting system, no matter how good it is claimed to be, cannot be sustained for long periods of time.
Card counting is another myth in the game of blackjack. People claim that by counting cards can one predict the type of cards that would be dealt next. Scientific studies prove that for a person to count cards and know where they are dealt or placed requires much concentration and can take hours to figure out. This is impossible for Blackjack is played at a fast pace. The best that anyone can do is to determine the odds in every game and join.
One common slot myth is that the players are monitored by the casino from hidden cameras and that they decide on who winds and who loses. In reality, there are no hidden cameras or any special devices that monitor slot players. The slot machine is run entirely by its own computer system and no human intervention.
Speculation is one human trait that gives rise to myths for it is when people do not recognize or understand something that they tend to formulate conclusions of their own.
